Changing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server NetBIOS name or IP address

Article ID: KB11224

Type: Support Content

Last Modified: 05-16-2011

Product(s) Affected:

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Novell® GroupWise®
CollapseOverview

The name given to the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server during installation is by default the network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) name of the computer on which the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software is installed. However, changing the NetBIOS name does not affect the operation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Additionally, changing the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server does not affect functionality. Changes to firewall mappings may need to be updated to include the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server IP address and opening port 3101.

Do not specify the IP address of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server in the host file if BlackBerry® smartphone users use or have access to BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. If they are properly set up with the Domain Name System (DNS) name of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the DNS server tables are updated, BlackBerry smartphone users should have no problems.

CollapseEnvironment
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 4.1 to 5.0 SP3 for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 4.1 to 5.0 SP1 for Novell® GroupWise®
CollapseAdditional Information

Note: Depending on how the environment is set up, the IP address might cause Server Routing Protocol (SRP) connectivity issues and the firewall rules will need to be updated. Additionally, if the BlackBerry® MDS Connection Service server is using an internal web proxy, the routing of internet browsing traffic may fail if the proxy is filtering based on an IP address.

Important: The change of the NetBIOS name will break the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service to BlackBerry Enterprise Server mapping. To resolve this issue, update the MDS_CS to BES Mappings on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to point to the new NetBIOS name. It may be necessary to refer to KB17629 to update the configuration saved in the MDSConfig table and ImagePath Registry entry.

Additionally, it is not recommended to change the NetBIOS name of BlackBerry MDS Integration Service server.
