Article ID: KB18176

Type: Support Content

Last Modified: 11-04-2011

Product(s) Affected:

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for IBM® Lotus® Domino®
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Novell® GroupWise®
CollapseOverview

After BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 5.0 install is completed, the BlackBerry® Administration Service web console might not be accessible. In addition, the BlackBerry Administration Service Application Server service might start and then immediately stop.

CollapseEnvironment
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 5.0 to 5.0 SP1
  • Microsoft® SQL Server®
CollapseCause

The Microsoft SQL Server instance configured during the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation has conflicting settings (static or dynamic ports setup) to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Configuration Tool on the Database Connectivity tab.

As a result, the BlackBerry Administration Service Application Server (BAS-AS) service stops shortly after starting.

The following log lines appear in the BAS-AS log file when this problem occurs:

<snip>
[WARN] ... Could not create connection; - nested throwable: (com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The TCP/IP connection to the host has failed. java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect)
at org.jboss.resource.adapter.jdbc.local.LocalManagedConnectionFactory.createManagedConnection( LocalManagedConnectionFactory.java:179)
at org.jboss.resource.connectionmanager.InternalManagedConnectionPool.createConnectionEventListener( InternalManagedConnectionPool.java:577)
</snip>

CollapseResolution

Check the database settings that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is using by going under the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Configuration Tool on the Database Connectivity tab. Make sure that it matches the database settings in the Microsoft SQL Server Configuration Manager.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

  1. Open Microsoft SQL Configuration Manager, click Start > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration.
  2. Select the Microsoft SQL Server instance that contains the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
  3. Right-click TCP/IP and select Properties.
  4. Select the IP Addresses tab.
  5. Compare the IP addresses listed for each Active address (IP1, IP2, etc) to the IP address which resolves to the FQDN listed in the Database Connectivity tab within the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Configuration Tool. If the value does not match, update the Database Connectivity tab in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Configuration Tool.

    Note: One way to match the IP address to the FQDN is to use nbtstat -A <IP address> from the command prompt.

  6. In Windows® Services, right-click each of the Microsoft SQL Services, and then select Restart.
  7. Restart the BlackBerry Administration Service - Application Server service.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE)

  1. Navigate to Start > Run and enter svrnetcn.exe and click OK.
  2. Locate the Microsoft SQL Server instance the BlackBerry Configuration Database is running on from the drop-down list on the General tab.
  3. Select TCP/IP from the Enabled protocols column and click Properties.
  4. Confirm that the value in the Default Port field matches the BlackBerry Server Configuration tool on the Database Connectivity tab. If the value does not match, update the Database Connectivity tab within the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Configuration Tool.
  5. Restart the Microsoft SQL Server service from the Windows Services console.
  6. Restart the BlackBerry Administration Service - Application Server from Windows Services.
