This article introduces the BlackBerry App World™ storefront. It includes the following topics:

BlackBerry App World storefront overview

The BlackBerry App World storefront is a wireless application store that is available on BlackBerry® smartphones. It is designed to allow BlackBerry smartphone users to discover new items, download free and trial items, and purchase items using valid PayPal® accounts, credit cards (BlackBerry App World 2.0 or later) or by adding the bill to your wireless service plan (BlackBerry App World 2.0 or later). BlackBerry smartphone users can use the BlackBerry App World storefront to rate and share items with other BlackBerry smartphone users.

Installing and removing BlackBerry App World

BlackBerry App World can be installed using one of the following methods:

  • Download from www.blackberry.com/appworld/download on the BlackBerry smartphone or from a computer
  • Virtual preload from the wireless service provider
  • Download from Application Center

When BlackBerry App World has been installed, the App World icon appears on the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone for BlackBerry® Device Software version 4.5 or earlier, and in the Downloads folder for BlackBerry Device Software version 4.6 and later.

To remove BlackBerry App World on 4.2 - 5.0 device software, complete the following steps:

  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, go to Options > Advanced Options > Applications.
  2. Highlight BlackBerryApp World.
  3. Press the Menu key, and click Delete.
To remove BlackBerry App World on 6.0 to 7.1 device software, complete the following steps:
  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, go to Options > Device > Application Management
  2. Highlight BlackBerry App World under the Applications view
  3. Press the Menu key, and click Delete.
BlackBerry App World can also be removed using the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. For more information on removing applications, see the BlackBerry Desktop Software User Guide found at http://docs.blackberry.com.

Navigating BlackBerry App World

BlackBerry smartphone users can browse and search for items by using the following search options:

  • Browse Featured items
  • Select Categories to browse for items by category (for example, Games, Photos, Instant Messaging)
  • Select Newest to browse the newest applications available (BlackBerry App World 2.0)
  • Select Top Free or Free Apps to browse the catalogue of free items
  • Select Top Paid or Paid Apps to browse the catalogue of paid items
  • Select Recently Updated to browse the most recently updated applications (BlackBerry App World 2.0)
  • Select Search to search for items by application name, vendor name, or item description
    • Search results can be sorted by the following criteria:
      • Relevance or best match
      • Newest
      • Rating
      • Price
      • Vendor
      • App Name 
      • Popularity
  • Select My World to manage (review, recommend, upgrade, re-install, remove, and run) items that have been purchased or downloaded
    • My World includes the following:
      • A list of downloaded or purchased items
      • The progress and status of items being downloaded
      • A memory indicator that clearly shows the amount of Application memory available for downloads (BlackBerry App World 2.0)
      • An indicator to show when an item has an available upgrade
      • Items that have been removed by the BlackBerry smartphone user
      • Items that have been purchased but are not compatible with a new BlackBerry smartphone
      • Subscription information
  • Select My Account to manage payment options and content controls (BlackBerry App World 3.1)

Downloading, buying, or viewing details about an item

After an item has been selected using one of the methods described above, the following options are available on the Details screen:

  • Download a free item
  • Purchase a paid item
  • Reinstall the item
  • View the item name, icon, vendor, rating, reviews, size, price, description, and screenshots
  • Recommend an item to another BlackBerry smartphone user by sending a link and custom message using one of the following message types:
    • Email message
    • Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) message
    • Personal identification number (PIN) message
    • Short Message Service (SMS) message

Legal requirements

Research In Motion® (RIM®) takes no support or damage responsibility for items; application and data usage, function, and content is at the customer's own discretion. The following are the legal requirements for the Customer Terms and Conditions (EULA):

  • BlackBerry smartphone users must accept the terms of a license agreement the first time they log in to BlackBerry App World
  • If necessary, BlackBerry smartphone users must also sign an agreement or content provider Terms and Conditions

Requirements

The following requirements must be met to use BlackBerry App World:

  • A wireless service data plan that supports web browsing
  • A BlackBerry smartphone with a trackball or touch screen
  • BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2 or later (BlackBerry App World 1.1)
  • BlackBerry Device Software version 4.5 or later (BlackBerry App World 2.0)
  • BlackBerry Device Software version 5.0 or later (BlackBerry App World 3.1)

Note: BlackBerry App World is not supported on BlackBerry smartphones with trackwheels. For more information on requirements for BlackBerry App World, see KB17659.
