How to configure the BlackBerry Desktop Software to use a new MAPI profile

After creating a new Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile, the BlackBerry Desktop Software must be configured to use the new MAPI profile.

Note: For instructions on how to create a new MAPI profile in Microsoft Outlook see KB02083.


Choose one of the following procedures:

  • If the BlackBerry Desktop Software can be opened, configure BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  • If the BlackBerry Desktop Software cannot be opened, modify the BlackBerry registry settings.

Configure BlackBerry Desktop Software

To configure the BlackBerry Desktop Software to use the new MAPI profile, configure the organizer applications and assign the new MAPI profile as the default profile.

Configure the organizer applications

BlackBerry Desktop Software 7.0 to 7.1

  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  2. Click Organizer.
  3. Click Configure of the organizer data base that is to be synchronized.
  4. Select Microsoft Outlook as the Contacts account.
  5. Select configure. 
  6. Select the new Microsoft Outlook MAPI profile and settings, and click Next
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Repeat steps 4 to 7 for the remaining BlackBerry smartphone organizer applications. Click OK to close the application window. 
  9. Select Sync by type then Organizer or select Sync all.

BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0 to 6.1

  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  2. Click Organize.
  3. Click Configure Settings.
  4. Select a BlackBerry smartphone organizer application, and click Setup
  5. Select a desktop organizer application, and click Next
  6. Select synchronization options, and click Next
  7. Select the new Microsoft Outlook MAPI profile and settings, and click Next
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Repeat steps 4 to 8 for the remaining BlackBerry smartphone organizer applications. Click OK to close the application window. 
  10. Select Sync by type then Organizer or select Sync all.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.5 to 5.0 
  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer, and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  2. Click Synchronize.
  3. Click the Synchronization link on the left side of the screen, then click the Synchronization button. 
  4. Select a BlackBerry smartphone organizer application, and click Setup
  5. Select a desktop organizer application, and click Next
  6. Select synchronization options, and click Next
  7. Select the new Microsoft Outlook MAPI profile and settings, and click Next
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Repeat steps 4 to 8 for the remaining BlackBerry smartphone organizer applications. Click OK to close the application window.
  10. Click the Synchronize link on the left side of the screen, and click the Synchronize button.

Modify the BlackBerry Registry Settings

If the BlackBerry Desktop Software cannot be opened, modify the registry settings to use the new MAPI profile.

Warning: Modifying the computer registry can cause substantial damage to the Windows operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.

  1. Close the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  2. Open the Registry Editor.
  3. Go to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry
  4. In the right pane, click the MAPIProfile variable.
  5. Press the Delete key.
  6. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click Yes.
  7. Close the Registry Editor.
  8. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
  9. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The Choose Profile dialog box appears.
  10. In the Profile Name drop-down list, select the new MAPI profile and click OK.

Note: If the default profile in Microsoft Outlook was changed, restore it. Otherwise, A prompt for the setup wizard will appear the next time Microsoft Outlook is opened.

If Configure PIM cannot be selected, follow the steps below to configure the organizer applications:

  1. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\User Profile\Application Data\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Intellisync\<PIN>.cfg.
  2. In the C1C7D7D6.cfg file, change the value of each organizer application to the new MAPI Profile. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.0 SP1 to 5.0, this file is named 5E316FDC.cfg.
