How to set a custom ring tone on a BlackBerry smartphone

Different ring tones and alerts can be set for incoming messages and calls from specific contacts. When a call or message is received, the BlackBerry® smartphone uses the ring tone or alert assigned to the sender, even if the sound profile is set to Silent or Vibrate Only.

BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 to 4.7

  1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Contacts.
  2. Select the contact that a custom ring tone is being added for.
  3. Press the Menu key and click Edit.
  4. Press the Menu key again and click Add Custom Phone Tune.
  5. Select a ring tone from the list of available ring tones.
  6. Press the Menu key and click Save.

BlackBerry Device Software 5.0

  1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Sounds.
  2. Click Set Contact Alerts.
  3. Click Add Contact Alert.
  4. Press the Menu key.
  5. Click Add Name.
  6. Click a contact.
  7. To add additional contacts, repeat steps 3 through 5.
  8. Click the application or item that you want to change.
  9. Change the ring tone or alert information.
  10. Press the Menu key.
  11. Click Save.

BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 to 7.1

  1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Sounds.
  2. Click Change Sounds and Alerts.
  3. Choose Sounds for Contacts.
  4. Select Add Contact Alert.
  5. Add the contact information and custom alert information.
  6. Press the Menu key.
  7. Click Save.

Note: Set the sound profile to All Alerts Off to turn off notifications with the assigned ring tone or alert.

The custom setting for message alerts includes both email and SMS messages. The custom notification cannot be set for only email messages or only SMS messages. This setting is by design.
