To correctly close an application on a BlackBerry smartphone, in the application, display the menu and then select Close or Exit. Pressing the Escape key on the BlackBerry smartphone may exit the application but may also leave it running in the background. Leaving applications running in the background may result in poor performance and lower the amount of available memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.

The Switch Application option can be used to confirm what applications are currently running on the BlackBerry smartphone. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, display the menu, and then select Switch Application. In the list of applications, there are default applications which include Phone, BlackBerry® Messenger, Home Screen, Browser and Messages.

In addition to the default applications, if there are any applications running in the background, those applications will also appear. Select the icon for the application you want to close, and then correctly close the application.
