Unable to upgrade BlackBerry Device Software because the message "BlackBerry Device Software updates are only available to BlackBerry smartphone users with an active BlackBerry service subscription" appears when Desktop Manager is launched

If an update of BlackBerry® Device Software is attempted when there is not an active service subscription associated with the BlackBerry smartphone, the following message appears on the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager:

To enjoy the latest functionality from the select BlackBerry® Device Software upgrade, you'll need an active BlackBerry® service subscription. Visit www.blackberry.com/service to learn more about BlackBerry services.

The options available in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager are Back or Main Menu.  Other options are unavailable.

BlackBerry smartphones cannot be upgraded from one code line to another code line without an active line of data service.  For example BlackBerry Device Software 5.0.0.975 to 6.0.0.431 will prompt you to have an active data service on the BlackBerry smartphone.

This issue might also occur when software updates are performed on a BlackBerry smartphone that has never had the wireless transceiver turned on. Turn on the wireless transceiver, confirm receipt of a registration message, and then proceed with the software update.
