When connecting to the wireless service provider's network for the first time, or when travelling and roaming on a different wireless service provider's network for the first time, a prompt appears to update the time zone on the BlackBerry® smartphone to match the wireless service provider's time zone, as shown in the following image. This feature can be configured by clicking Options > Date/Time to be turned on or off manually or to prompt automatically (default).

If the option is turned off or set to prompt, and the prompt is dismissed, the time zone may be manually altered on the BlackBerry smartphone when roaming on a different wireless service provider's network.

 

For users on BlackBerry® Enterprise Server on 5.0 SP1 and higher, an IT policy rule may be used to control this option.

In Date and Time IT Policy group

Automatic Time Zone Change Detection IT policy rule specifies whether a BlackBerry device can update the time zone setting automatically based on the information that it receives from the wireless network. The default value is Prompt.

As the radio decodes a NITZ (Network Identity and Time Zone) update from the wireless service provider, it will report it to the application layer of the BlackBerry smartphone and the ATZ will pick this up.

Note: Some networks do not support NITZ, and therefore this update will not be picked up by the radio on the BlackBerry smartphone. In this case, the time zone will have to be manually altered on the BlackBerry smartphone.
