Product(s) Affected:

  • BlackBerry World for BlackBerry OS 7 and earlier
CollapseEnvironment
  • BlackBerry App World storefront 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, and 3.1
CollapseOverview

When BlackBerry App World storefront 2.0, 2.1, or 3.0 is accessed by only a Wi-Fi connection, BlackBerry smartphone users may see the following error:

A data plan is required to use this feature

CollapseCause

This is an expected behavior that will be observed if the Wi-Fi only connection is used with the mobile network connection set to Off.

CollapseResolution

Ensure that the mobile network connection is turned on or upgrade to BlackBerry App World 3.1 and higher which supports Wi-Fi access.

CollapseAdditional Information

The BlackBerry App World application is designed to use a number of available transports to deliver applications to a BlackBerry smartphone. This article identifies the data transports that can be used and the priority in which they are selected.

BlackBerry App World uses the following transports based on availability and are numbered by preference:

  1. Direct Wi-Fi (no virtual private network [VPN])
  2. BlackBerry Internet Service
  3. BlackBerry Enterprise Server
  4. Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 2
  5. Default WAP 1.x

Note: BlackBerry App World can use the WAP transports. These could incur extra network charges. Please consult with your wireless service provider for information regarding these charges.

In BlackBerry App World 2.0, 2.1, and 3.0, an active Mobile Data Network is required to access the application for the reason that BlackBerry App World will need the mobile country codes (MCC) to function on the wireless service provider's network. A Wi-Fi only network does not supply the MCC information. This is an expected behavior.

This article contains information previously documented in KB19846.
