4. After the BlackBerry Card Reader software is installed in Microsoft Windows, connect the smartphone and launch BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If prompted, ensure that the S/MIME Support Package for BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry Smart Card Reader are selected.

5. Once the BlackBerry Desktop Manager application loader has completed successfully, disconnect the smartphone.

Ensure that the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader hardware has the same version of BlackBerry Smart Card Reader software installed as the smartphone:

1. Connect the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader and launch BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If prompted install BlackBerry Smart Card Reader Core Applications.

2. Once the update has completed, select the Application Loader section in BlackBerry Desktop Manager and select add/remove applications.

3. Ensure that the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader software is selected.

4. Once the BlackBerry Desktop Manager application loader has completed successfully, disconnect the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.

To pair the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, complete the following steps:

1. On the BlackBerry smartphone device, open the Options menu, click Security Options, then select Smart Card.

2. In the Registered Reader Drivers section, click BlackBerry.

Note: If BlackBerry is not listed under Registered Reader Drivers, then the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader software has not been installed correctly using the Application Loader. Ensure it has been installed and is listed as Smart Card Reader under Options > Device > Application Management on the BlackBerry.

3. Press the Menu key and select Connect.

4. On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the Action key.

5. On the BlackBerry smartphone device, type the Reader ID that appears on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader screen, then press the enter key.

6. On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the Action key.

To import certificates from the Smart Card Reader to smartphone keystore:

1. On the BlackBerry smartphone device open the Options menu, click Security Options, then select Smart Card.

2. Press the Menu key and select Import Smart Card Certs.

3. On the BlackBerry smartphone device, type the Smart Card PIN and click OK.

4. A message will confirm if certificates were imported successfully to the smartphone keystore.

Note:

If certificates can't be imported to the smartphone keystore, the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader and BlackBerry smartphone may not have the correct smart card drivers installed.

Download the correct smart card drivers from http://us.blackberry.com/business/topics/security/government.jsp or the Smart Card manufacturers' website and install the updated drivers on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader and BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry Desktop Software.

Pressing and holding the action key on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader for 5 seconds will force the device to reset itself. This will remove the Bluetooth keys from the device, and break the pairing with the BlackBerry smartphone.
Care should be taken when carrying the Smart Card Reader to avoid accidentally resetting the device.
