Prefix Field in Gmail contacts causes contact information to synchronize incorrectly with the BlackBerry Smartphone

Article ID: KB25753

Type: Support Content

Last Modified: 08-13-2012

Product(s) Affected:

  • BlackBerry 7 OS and earlier Applications
  • BlackBerry Internet Service
  • BlackBerry® Internet Service
  • BlackBerry® smartphones
  • Gmail®
The Prefix field contained in the contacts section of Gmail does not map correctly to the BlackBerry® smartphone. When the BlackBerry® Internet Service performs a synchronization of contacts, information in this field will cause the information in the Prefix field to populate in the First Name field, and move the First Name information into the Last Name field.
The Prefix field was added to Gmail interface after the contact synchronization feature was implemented in the BlackBerry Internet Service. This means that the contact synchronization does not contain a mapping for the Prefix field to the BlackBerry Address book.

The current mapping from Gmail contacts to the BlackBerry address book is to take the first value in the Gmail Title field and map that to First Name, and then take the remainder of the information and map it to Last Name.

To continue with contact synchronization, do not add information to this field, or add the information that is typically included in this field to the Notes field in the contact information for reference if required.

To disable contact synchronization please see KB19271.
