The BlackBerry Device Analyzer is an application included with BlackBerry 7.1 smartphones. The application incorporates a set of menu options that are designed to assist in identifying possible issues with the BlackBerry smartphone.
The BlackBerry Device Analyzer application options are not visible on the smartphone by default.
Cause 1
The BlackBerry Device Analyzer options are missing from the home screen of the BlackBerry Smartphone however the application is installed and listed under Options >Device >Application Management. The application will no longer be available as an icon on the home screen of the BlackBerry Smartphone. This is due to a design change in the application behavior and it is now hidden by default.
Cause 2
The Application is not visible under Options >Device >Application Management. In BlackBerry Smartphones running Blackberry 7.1 bundles lower than 7.1.0.675 (Bundle 1948) the application can be removed by a restrictive application control policy sent by a BlackBerry Enterprise server. This is because the BlackBerry Device Analyzer application was marked as an Add-On application in earlier software builds - this means it will obey application control disposition set on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Resolution 1
Follow these steps to enable BlackBerry Device Analyzer on a BlackBerry smartphone that has either a QWERTY keyboard or a SureType keyboard
- On the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options
- Hold the ALT key and type BBDA ( ALT + BBDA)
- The message enabled in options application will appear on the screen.
Follow these steps to enable BlackBerry Device Analyzer on a BlackBerry Torch without QWERTY keyboard:
- On the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options
- Rotate the device to the landscape position to ensure the full keyboard is displayed
- Press the number key follow by ?? 5 * keys
- The message BlackBerry Device Analyzer enabled in options application will appear on the screen.
The application will appear under Options >Device >Advance System settings >BlackBerry Device Analyzer
Note: After a reboot of the device the application menus will become hidden again until the the Alt BBDA option is used again
Resolution 2
Upgrade the BlackBerry Smartphone software to 7.1.0.675 (Bundle 1948) or later. BlackBerry Smartphone code later than this is bundled with a version that will not be removed by application controls.
Note: To display the icon on BlackBerry Smartphone software to 7.1.0.675 or later it is still required to perform the steps in Resolution 1) to display the icon.
Workaround for Cause 2
To workaround the issue whereby the BlackBerry Device Analyzer Application was removed by a restrictive Application Control Policy, a later version of the application (that is not marked as "Add-on") can be published and pushed out from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. A Desktop (.cod and .alx) package for version 1.1.0.47 is now avialable for download from the BlackBerry Expert Support Centre (BESC). This version should not be affected by a restrictive ACP.
Note: After deploying BlackBerry Device Analyzer 1.1.0.47, to display the icon on BlackBerry Smartphone it is still required to perform the steps in Resolution 1) to display the icon. This is true of all later versions of the application.
