This article provides information and steps on how to backup and restore information to the BlackBerry 10 smartphone using BlackBerry Link.

Create a Backup file

To backup information from the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, complete the following:

  1. Open BlackBerry Link.
  2. Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable.
  3. At the side of the screen, select the device.
  4. Click Back Up & Restore.
    Note: To choose specific information to be backed up, select the Custom Backup option.
  5. Click Back Up Device.
  6. Wait until the backup process has completed before disconnecting your device.

Restore a backup file

BlackBerry Link can be used to restore information to a BlackBerry 10 smartphone from:

  • A BlackBerry device running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later
  • A BlackBerry 10 smartphone

To restore a backup file to the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, complete the following:

  1. Open BlackBerry Link.
  2. Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable.
  3. At the side of the screen, select the device.
  4. Click Back Up & Restore.
  5. Click Restore Device.
  6. Complete one of the following:
    • To restore all information from a backup file:
      1. Select the backup file.
    • To restore specific information from a backup file:
      1. Select the backup file.
      2. Clear the Restore all data check box.
      3. Select the check box beside one or more databases to restore.
    • To restore information from a backup file that is not listed:
      1. Click the Change Folder icon.
      2. Navigate to the backup file.
      3. Click OK.
  7. Click Restore.
  8. Wait until the restore process has completed before disconnecting your device.

Types of information that can be restored to a BlackBerry 10 smartphone

If the backup file is from a smartphone is running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 to 7.1 the following can be restored:

  • Device settings
  • Phone history
  • Music, pictures, and videos stored on the built-in media storage
  • BBM contacts and groups (BBM 6.2 or earlier)
  • Browser bookmarks
  • Text messages
  • Passwords
  • Wi-Fi profiles
  • Saved searches
  • Personal contacts and calendar appointments that are not synced with an online source such as Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, or Yahoo! Mail

If the backup file is from a smartphone is running BlackBerry 10 OS, the following can be restored:

  • Settings - System settings and organizer information stored in device memory for apps such as Contacts, Calendar, Remember, etc.
  • Application data - Applications and information associated with them. i.e. High scores, game progress, application settings, etc.
  • Media - Pictures, videos, and music.
  • Work space data - This depends on the environment and options set by your administrator.
