  • DT 6855512
  • DT 6303631

An attempt to change the installation path for BlackBerry Device Service to be longer than the default path specified will result in the following message:

The installation path is too long. You must specify an installation path that is less than 67 characters.

This verification has been intentionally included in BlackBerry Device Service installation as a result of the issue observed in DT 6303631. Previous to this change, if an administrator selected a long installation path it could lead to the creation of file paths for the software that exceed the 260 character Windows path limitation called MAX_PATH and so the installation would fail.

The default install path on a Windows 64 bit machine will be:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Device Service.

The above path is 67 characters and it leads to the longest file path after install nearing the limit at 250 characters:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Device Service\

Therefore, the limit for the install path was set at 67 to avoid the failed installation.

Reduce the length of the installation path to 67 characters or less.
