Unable to accept a BBM invite using BBM for Android and iPhone when the invite was sent from a BlackBerry smartphone using email or SMS text message

If a BBM invite sent via email or SMS text message from a BlackBerry smartphone is received on BBM for Android or iPhone, the recipient will not be able to accept or ignore the received invite.

The body of the invite will appear as follows:

I'd like to invite you to chat over BlackBerry Messenger.

If you don't currently have the required application on your device, please visit www.BlackBerry.com/messenger to learn more about this service.  Once you've installed BlackBerry Messenger, contact the original inviter and request another invitation.

Upgrade to the latest version of BBM before sending a BBM invite via Email or SMS.

To upgrade BBM for BlackBerry 10 smartphones launch BlackBerry World, access  My World - My Apps & Games - Updates.

To upgrade BBM for BlackBerry OS smartphones launch BlackBerry World, access My World - Upgrades.

To upgrade BBM for Android visit the Google Play Store or www.BBM.com/Android to update to the latest version of BBM.

To upgrade BBM for iPhone visit the App Store or www.BBM.com/iPhone to update to the latest version of BBM.

Complete one of the following workarounds:

Workaround 1

Request that the sender of the invite provide their BlackBerry smartphone PIN number and invite them from BBM for Android or iPhone using their PIN.

To Invite by PIN using BBM for Android and iPhone, complete the following:

  1. Open BBM.
  2. Tap the More button (3 vertical dots).
  3. Tap Invite to BBM > Invite by PIN.
  4. Enter the PIN number and tap Send.

Workaround 2

Provide the sender of the invite with the PIN number of the invited device so that they can send a new invite from the BlackBerry smartphone using the PIN.

To Invite to BBM by PIN on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, complete the following:

  1. Open BBM.
  2. Tap the More button (3 vertical dots).
  3. Tap Invite to BBM.
  4. Enter the PIN number and tap Send.

To Invite to BBM by PIN using BBM on the BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 7 and earlier, complete the following:

  1. Open BBM.
  2. Press the Menu key.
  3. Select Invite to BBM.
  4. Enter the PIN number and click Send.

Workaround 3

If the BBM invite occurred while in-person, complete the invite process using either the Scan to Invite or Tap to Invite method.

Note:

  • If using the Scan to Invite method, one BBM user must display their barcode. The barcode can be displayed by accessing the user profile (where name, display picture, and status are updated) and selecting Show Barcode.
  • For the NFC method, both devices must have the NFC feature and it must be enabled.

To complete the invite process using either the barcode or NFC from the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, complete the following:

  1. Open BBM.
  2. Tap the More button (3 vertical dots) > Invite to BBM.
  3. Tap the More button (3 vertical dots) and choose either Scan to Invite or Tap to Invite.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan or tap and complete the invite.

To complete the invite process using the barcode from the BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 7 and earlier, complete the following:

  1. Open BBM.
  2. Press the Menu key.
  3. Select Invite to BBM > Scan a PIN barcode.
  4. Scan the barcode to complete

To complete the invite process using the barcode from BBM for Android and iPhone, complete the following:

  1. Open BBM.
  2. Tap the More button (3 vertical dots).
  3. Tap Invite to BBM > Invite by Barcode.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan and complete the invite.
