How to transfer contact information from a Palm OS device to a BlackBerry smartphone

Note: If running BlackBerry® Desktop Software 4.1 or later, use the PIM Data Migration Wizard to import data from a Palm® OS device or a Windows Mobile™ device to a BlackBerry® smartphone. For details, see KB04437.

If using Microsoft® Outlook® to synchronize the contact information on the Palm OS device, then complete Method 1.

If using the Palm Desktop software to synchronize the contact information on the Palm OS device, then complete Method 2.
 

Method 1

If using Outlook to synchronize the contact information on the Palm OS device, complete the following steps:

  1. Synchronize the Palm OS device with Outlook to make sure that all contacts on the Palm OS device have been synchronized with Outlook.
  2. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the personal computer.
  3. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software, then click Organizer.
  4. On the Organizer Data to Synchronize window, click Configure settings...
  5. Select the check box beside Address Book, then click Choose.
  6. From the Available Desktop applications list, select Microsoft Outlook. Click Next
  7. Choose One way sync to Device. Click Next
  8. Choose the Outlook user profile, click Next
  9. Click Finish to return to the Intellisync window. Click Ok
  10. Click Sync. The contact data is transferred to the BlackBerry smartphone.

Method 2

If using the Palm Desktop software to synchronize the contact information on the Palm OS device, complete the following four tasks:

Task 1 - Export the Data

  1. Synchronize the Palm OS device with the Palm Desktop software to make sure that all the contacts on the Palm OS device have been synchronized with the Palm Desktop software.
  2. Open the Palm Desktop software and click View > Address Book
  3. Select File > Export. The Export As dialog box appears.
  4. Select a location to save the exported file and verify the Export type field is set to Comma Separated(*.csv; *.txt).
  5. Confirm the Range option is set to All, then click Export.
  6. Confirm the fields listed below are selected in the Specify Export section:
    • Title
    • First Name
    • Last Name
    • Company
    • Work
    • Home
    • Other
    • Email
    • Address
    • City
    • State
    • Zip Code
    • Country
    • Custom 1
    • Custom 2
    • Custom 3
    • Custom 4
    • Note
    • Private
    • Category
  7. Close the Palm Desktop software.
Task 2 - Format the Data File
Complete the following steps to assign a column heading for each data type.
  1. Using Microsoft Excel, open the data file created in Task 1.
  2. Click inside cell A1 to select the first row.
  3. Click Insert > Rows to create a header row.
  4. In cells A1 through T1, enter the field names listed in step 6 (in Task 1 above).
     
    Note: The table below is an example of how the first three column headings should appear.
     
    First Name Last Name Title
    <First_Name> <Last_Name> <Title>
     
  5. Click File > Save.
Task 3 - Import the Data to Microsoft Outlook
 
Microsoft Outlook 2010
  1. In Microsoft Outlook, select File > Open
  2. Click on Import
  3. Select Import from another program or file. Click Next.
  4. Select Comma Separated Values (Windows). Click Next.
  5. Click Browse.
  6. Locate and select the data file created in Task 1. Click OK.
  7. Choose desired options (Replace duplicates with the items imported, Allow duplicates to be created, or Do not import duplicate items)
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select the Contacts folder. Click Next.
  10. Check off Import "filename.csv" into folder where the "filename.csv" is the CSV created in Task 1.
  11. Select Map Custom Fields. Ensure the fields are correctly mapped. If the fields are mapped incorrectly, the data will be imported into the wrong fields.
  12. To modify the field mapping, click and drag the mapping field, then click OK.
  13. If no changes were made click cancel.
  14. Click Finish.
  15. The Import and Export Progress window will display.
Microsoft Outlook 2007
  1. In Microsoft Outlook, select File > Import and Export.
  2. Select Import from another program or file. Click Next.
  3. Select Comma Separated Values (Windows). Click Next.
  4. Click Browse.
  5. Locate and select the data file created in Task 1. Click OK.
  6. Choose desired options (Replace duplicates with the items imported, Allow duplicates to be created, or Do not import duplicate items)
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select the Contacts folder. Click Next.
  9. Check off Import "filename.csv" into folder where the "filename.csv" is the CSV created in Task 1.

  2. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the personal computer.
  3. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software, then click Organizer.
  4. On the Organizer Data to Synchronize window, click Configure settings...
  5. Select the check box beside Address Book, then click Choose.
  6. From the Available Desktop applications list, select Microsoft Outlook. Click Next
  7. Choose One way sync to Device. Click Next
