How to change the password on the BlackBerry smartphone

Note: If you have a previously owned BlackBerry smartphone and you do not know the password to unlock it, see KB10711 for instructions on how to reset your password.

To change the password on a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software version 4.0 to 4.5, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Security Options > General Settings.

    Note: If you are running BlackBerry Device Software version 4.0 SP2 or earlier, click Options > Security.

  2. Open the menu and click Change Password.
  3. Complete the instructions on the screen.

To change the password on the BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software version 4.6 to 5.0, please complete the following steps:

  1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone go to Options > Password.
  2. Open the menu and click Change Password.
  3. Complete the instructions on the screen.

To change the password on the BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 to 7.1, please complete the following steps:

  1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone go to Options > Security.
  2. Within the menu, choose Password.
  3. Under General within Password, select Change Password
  4. Input the current old password, then input the new desired password and verify the new password
  5. Save the settings and exit to the home screen.
