How to change the default email account on the BlackBerry smartphone

To change the default email account, complete the appropriate set of steps below, depending on which version of BlackBerry® Device Software is being used.

Note: The Desktop (or BlackBerry) service book is the service book associated with a work email account using a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server.

For BlackBerry Device Software 4.0

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options.
  2. Click Message Services. The default messaging service is highlighted.
  3. Display the menu and select Change Option.
  4. Select the email account to be set as the default messaging service.
  5. Display the menu and select Save.

For BlackBerry Device Software 4.1

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options.
  2. Click Advanced Options.
  3. Click Message Services. The default messaging service is highlighted.
  4. Display the menu and select Change Option.
  5. Select the email account to be set as the default messaging service.
  6. Display the menu and select Save.

For BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 to 5.0

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options.
  2. Click Advanced Options.
  3. Click Default Services. The default email account is displayed in the Messaging (CMIME) field.
  4. Scroll to highlight the default messaging service.
  5. Display the menu and select Change Option.
  6. Select the email account to be set as the default messaging service.
  7. Display the menu and select Save.

For BlackBerry 6.0 to 7.1

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options.
  2. Click Device.
  3. Click Advanced System Settings.
  4. Click Default Services.
  5. Select the drop-down list next to the Messaging (CMIME) field.
  6. Click the email account to be set as the default messaging service.
  7. Display the menu and select Save.
CollapseAdditional Information
The BlackBerry smartphone does not use the default messaging service book when sending to an email address if a different email address was used previously to send to that email address. The database address book last used hints stores this information and clearing this database will delete the history and the first new message will be sent using the default email address.
