How to install and set up SNMP for the BlackBerry Monitoring Service

To install the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for the BlackBerry® Monitoring Service from Windows Server® 2003, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Windows® Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs, then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  2. Double-click Management and Monitoring Tools.
  3. Select the Simple Network Management Protocol check box, then click OK.
  4. When prompted, install the files from the Windows media.
  5. Complete the installation process.

To install SNMP for the BlackBerry Monitoring Service from Windows Server 2008, complete the following steps:

  1. Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Server Manager to start Server Manager.
  2. In Server Manager, select the Features node and click Add Features to start the Add Features Wizard.
  3. Select SNMP Services.
  4. Click Next and Install.
  5. The menu displays Installation succeeded.
  6. Click Close.

If SNMP is installed after the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server is installed, you might have to complete the following additional steps:

Warning: The following procedure involves changing the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows operating system. Document and back up the registry entries before implementing any changes.

  1. Click Start > Run, type regedit and click OK to open the Registry Editor.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\Blackberry Enterprise Server\SNMPAgent. For a 64-bit OS, use HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Research In Motion\Blackberry Enterprise Server\SNMPAgent.
  3. Right-click SNMPAgent, then select New > Key.
  4. Type CurrentVersion for the name of the new Key Value, then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click CurrentVersion, then select New > String Value.
  6. Type PathName for the name of the new String Value, then press ENTER.
  7. Double-click PathName.
  8. In the Value data field, type the BlackBerry Enterprise Server SNMP agent location. For example:

    For 4.1:

    C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\BlackBerryServerSNMPAgent.dll

    For 5.0

    For a 32Bit OS: C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Monitoring Service\dll\BMSI_SNMP_Agent.dll

    For a 64 Bit OS: C:\Program Files (x86)\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Monitoring Service\dll\BMSI_SNMP_Agent.dll
  9. Click OK.
  10. Right-click SNMPAgent, then select New > Key.
  11. Type CompatVersion for the name of the new Key Value, then press ENTER.
  12. Type PathName for the name of the new String Value, then press ENTER
  13. Type PathName for the name of the new String Value, then press ENTER.
  14. Double-click PathName.
  15. In the Value data field, type C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Monitoring Service\dll\BMSI_SNMP_Agent_Compat.dll

    For a 64 Bit OS: C:\Program Files (x86)\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Monitoring Service\dll\BMSI_SNMP_Agent_Compat.dll
  16. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SNMP\Parameters\ExtensionAgents.
  17. Right-click ExtensionAgents, then select New > String Value.
  18. Type Server for the name of the new String Value, then press ENTER.
  19. Double-click Server.
  20. In the Value data field, type:

    For a 32bit OS: - SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\SNMPAgent\CurrentVersion and click OK.

    For a 64bit OS: - SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\SNMPAgent\CurrentVersion and click OK.

    To start the SNMP Service, in Administrative Tools > Services, right-click SNMP Service, then select Start.

Setting up the SNMP Service

To set up the SNMP Service, complete the following steps:

  1. In Administrative Tools > Services, right-click SNMP Service, then select Properties to open the Properties window.
  2. On the General tab, from the Startup type drop-down list, select Automatic.
  3. On the Traps tab, type the community name for the SNMP Service.

    Note: This field is case sensitive.
  4. In the Trap Destinations section, add the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer where the BlackBerry Monitoring Service will be installed.
  5. On the Security tab, add the community name that was specified in step 3 of this procedure.

    Note: The SNMP community name is Read-only.
  6. Select Accept SNMP packets from any host or Accept SNMP packets from these hosts.
  7. If Accept SNMP packets from the host is selected, type the IP address of the computer where the BlackBerry Monitoring Service will be installed.
  8. Click Apply, then click OK to close the Properties window.
  9. Right-click SNMP Service, then click Start.
