The BlackBerry® Desktop Manager abruptly closes when opened from Windows®. Also, the BlackBerry® Device Manager does not open.
Complete the following steps in order until resolution is obtained:
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
Step 1 - The BlackBerry Desktop Manager was not installed using the Administrator account
- On the computer, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts.
- Click Turn User Account Control on or off.
- Remove the check mark from User Access Control and click OK.
- Restart the computer.
OR
- Perform a clean uninstall of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. For instructions, see KB02206.
- Restart the computer.
- Download the most recent versions of BlackBerry® Device Software and BlackBerry Desktop Manager. For instructions, see KB12532.
- Right-click the setup file for BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.5 or later and select Run as Administrator.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup.
Step 2 - The RIMDeviceManagerps.dll file is incorrectly registered in Windows.
- On the computer, click Start > All Programs > Accessories.
- Right-click Command Prompt, and then select Run as Administrator.
- In the Command Prompt, type cd "\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\RIMDeviceManager".
- Press ENTER.
- Type regsvr32 RIMDeviceManagerps.dll.
- Press ENTER.
- Click OK.
Step 3 - The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager key has incorrect access permissions.
Verify that you have Read access to the following registry keys by right-clicking the registry key, choosing Permissions from the menu that pops up, and placing a check mark in the Read box:
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager\CLSID
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager\CurVer
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager.1
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager.1\CLSID
Step 4 - The BlackBerry Desktop Manager was installed for Only this user instead of All users.
Remove the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and install it again. When prompted to install the program for Only this user or for All users, choose All users.
Add full control permissions to registry keys
As a workaround to this issue, perform the following:
- Uninstall the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Open the Registry Editor.
- Create the following keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\RIMDeviceManager.DeviceManager.1
- Right-click each key and add Full Control permissions to Everyone.
- Install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager again.
