- BlackBerry® Desktop Software
- BlackBerry® Device Software 5.0 - 7.1
The BlackBerry® smartphone can connect to a computer in one of the following ways:
- USB Mass Storage Mode
- Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)
MTP allows a BlackBerry smartphone user to transfer media files between a computer and a BlackBerry smartphone and provides support for media files with special requirements, such as limitations associated with Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies. A BlackBerry smartphone appears as a Portable Device in My Computer when it is connected to the computer using MTP. It does not appear under Devices with Removable Storage and does not have a drive letter assigned to it.
In Windows Vista™ and Windows 7 and XP SP3 a BlackBerry smartphone appears under Portable Devices. .
When transferring DRM protected music between a BlackBerry smartphone and a computer, enable MTP. To enable MTP follow the steps below:
BlackBerry® Device Software 5.0
- From the home screen select Options > Memory.
- Locate Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and from the drop down menu select On.
BlackBerry® Device Software 6.0
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to a computer via USB
- The prompt for BlackBerry Device is plugged in will appear
- Select Sync Media
NOTE: Each time the BlackBerry smartphone is connected to a computer, Sync Media needs to be selected to enable MTP.
Windows Vista and Windows 7 has built-in support for MTP. Support for MTP in Windows XP requires the installation of Windows Media® Player 10 or higher.
