Pushing the BlackBerry MDS Runtime from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server

You can deploy the BlackBerry® MDS Runtime by pushing it from the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server over the wireless network to users smartphones.

This option requires no action by smartphone users.

Prepare the BlackBerry MDS Runtime files

Visit the BlackBerry Enterprise Software section at http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads to download the BlackBerry® MDS Runtime and extract its contents to a folder on the server.

CAUTION: In the following steps, ensure that you use the version of the BlackBerry MDS Runtime that is compatible with the BlackBerry smartphones in use.

1. Configure C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion as a shared directory.

2. If you do not already have a shared folder, create a subfolder in Research In Motion called Shared.

3. Create a subfolder in Shared called Applications.

4. Copy the .cod and .alx files for the BlackBerry® Device Software (for example, 4.1.0 or 4.2.0) to the Applications folder.

5. Remove any other files from the Applications folder.

6. At the command prompt, type cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader.

7. Type loader.exe /index.

The PkgDBCache.xml and specification.pkg files are created in the Applications folder. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server needs these files to deploy the BlackBerry MDS Runtime over the air.

Create a software configuration for the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

Create and assign a software configuration for the BlackBerry MDS Runtime

1. In the BlackBerry® Manager, in the left pane, click BlackBerry Domain.

2. On the Software Configurations tab, click Add New Configuration.

3. In the Configuration Name field, type a name.

4. In the Configuration Description field, type a description.

5. Specify the location of the BlackBerry® Device Software by clicking Change.

6. Type the path of the shared folder that contains the BlackBerry Device Software.

7. Click Ok.

8. In the Application Name list, expand Application Software.

9. Select the BlackBerry MDS Runtime check box.

10. In the Delivery list, click Wireless Only.

11. Click Ok.

12. In the BlackBerry Manager user list, right-click a device and click Assign Software Configuration.

13. Click the software configuration you created for the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

14. Click Ok .

In a moment, the BlackBerry MDS Runtime will start to download and the runtime environment will install automatically.
 
15. Repeat these steps for each version of the BlackBerry MDS Runtime that you deploy.

Installing the BlackBerry MDS Runtime over the wireless network

You can deploy the BlackBerry MDS Runtime over the air by posting the application files on the web server and providing users with a web page from which to download and install the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

Configure the web server to allow users to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime

• Visit the BlackBerry Enterprise Software section at http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime and extract its contents to a folder on the web server.

1. Configure the following MIME types on the web server to allow users to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime:

.cod files: application/vnd.rim.cod

.jad files: text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor

2. Create a web page or add a link to an existing web page that users will visit to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

3. Make sure that the .cod and .jad files are in the appropriate directory on the web server.

Provide a link to the .jad file and instruct users to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime using the web page you provided. Ensure that you provide links to the appropriate version of the BlackBerry MDS Runtime for each group of users.

Install the BlackBerry MDS Runtime from a web page

• Configure the web server to allow users to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

• Instruct users to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime using the web page you provided.

After you configure the web server and install the BlackBerry MDS Runtime application files, users perform the following actions to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

1. From the BlackBerry smartphone, open the BlackBerry® Browser.

2. Navigate to the web page and the link to the .jad file for the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

3. Click the link to download the BlackBerry MDS Runtime.

4. Click Download.

The BlackBerry MDS Runtime is installed on the BlackBerry device.
