How to back up and restore the BlackBerry Messenger contact list on BlackBerry smartphones

This Knowledge Base (KB) article describes how to backup and restore BlackBerry Messenger contacts on BlackBerry smartphones. See the steps below for the applicable version of BlackBerry Messenger.

Note: If attempting to restore BBM contacts from a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 5, BlackBerry 6, or BlackBerry 7 to the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, see KB33259.



BlackBerry Messenger 7.0:

To backup:

As of BlackBerry Messenger 7, the BBM contacts are associated with the BlackBerry ID and cannot be backed up using a microSD card or the local BlackBerry smartphone memory.

To restore:

BBM contacts will restore to the smartphone if the same BlackBerry ID is used.

Note: BlackBerry Messenger 7.0 Groups and Contacts cannot be backed up and restored using BlackBerry Desktop Software since the information is not stored locally on the smartphone. 

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0:

To backup:

  1. Open BlackBerry Messenger.
  2. Press the Menu key, and select Options.
  3. Under the Backup Management section, click Back Up.
  4. Click Back up files locally > Back Up Now.
  5. Select the location to save the backup file and click Save.

To restore:

  1. Open BlackBerry Messenger.
  2. Press the Menu key, and select Options.
  3. In the Backup Management section, click Restore.
  4. Click Restore using a backup file from device.
  5. Select the backup file to restore.
  6. Click Yes.

Note: BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 Groups and Contacts can also be backed up and restored using BlackBerry Desktop Software. See KB10339 for instructions.

BlackBerry Messenger 5.0:

To backup:

  1. Open BlackBerry Messenger
  2. Press the Menu key, and select Options.
  3. In the Contact List section, click Back Up.
  4. Click Back up files locally.
  5. In the Save backup files to field select Device or Media Card.
  6. Click Back Up Now.

To restore:

  1. Open BlackBerry Messenger.
  2. Press the Menu key, and select Options.
  3. In the Contact List section, click Restore.
  4. Click Restore using a backup file from the device.
  5. Select the back up file to restore.
  6. Click Yes.

Note: BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 Groups and Contacts can also be backed up and restored using BlackBerry Desktop Software. See KB10339 for instructions.

The BlackBerry Messenger contact list may be restored by performing an enterprise activation for users that already exist on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The wireless backup information is deleted from the server when the user is removed from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. See KB11202 for details on automatic wireless backup for BlackBerry smartphones on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
