How to transfer files between a computer and BlackBerry 10 smartphone or BlackBerry PlayBook

The following sections outline different methods of transferring files to and from the BlackBerry 10 smartphone or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

File Sharing via Wi-Fi Sharing

Complete the following steps to share files over a Wi-Fi connection for the BlackBerry Device:

  1. On the BlackBerry device, open Settings
  2. Select Storage and Sharing for BlackBerry PlayBook, or select Storage and Access for BlackBerry 10 smartphone
  3. Toggle Wi-Fi Sharing to ON for BlackBerry PlayBook or toggle Access using Wi-Fi to On for BlackBerry 10 smartphone
  4. Select Properties for BlackBerry PlayBook or select Identification on Network for BlackBerry 10 smartphone
    This allows verification of the device's network identification information. (username, password etc)
  5. Navigate to the IP address of the device from a Windows or Mac based computer on the same network as the BlackBerry device which can be found under Settings > About > Network.
    Follow the applicable steps below:
      
    1. On a Windows computer, open the Run dialog box (shortcut of Windows Key + R)
    2. Type file:\\127.1.1.1 or file:\\127.1.1.1
      (where 127.1.1.1 should be replaced with the actual IP address of the BlackBerry Device)
       
    3. On a Mac computer, select Go > Connect to Server
    4. Type smb://127.1.1.1
      (where 127.1.1.1 should be replaced with the actual IP address of the BlackBerry Device)
        
  6. Navigate to the media folder, or removable_sdcard folder if SD card is inserted in the device (once the device is connected to the computer)
    Note: A prompt will appear and ask for user name and password (as seen from step 4 above)
     
  7. Transfer the desired files between the computer and these folders.
    Note: The removable_sdcard folder and or device folder may contain several sub-folders such as documents, music, photos, videos, etc.

File Sharing with a Mac via USB connection

In order to share files between a Mac and BlackBerry device the BlackBerry Device Manager software is required which may be installed by one of the following methods:

  • Download and install BlackBerry Link by clicking here.
     
  • Installing the BlackBerry Device Manager software following the steps listed below.
  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the Mac.
  2. On the desktop or within Finder, double click BlackBerry Device CD/BlackBerry Link Installation.
  3. Double click the BlackBerry Device Manager Installer to start the installation process.
  4. Click Continue Installation after reviewing the Read Me and License Agreement.
  5. Reboot the computer when prompted.

Perform the following steps to transfer files after installing the BlackBerry Device Manager software:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer
  2. A message may appear stating a new network interface has been detected, if this is the case:
    1. Click on Network Preferences
    2. Click Apply
  3. Once connected the device's share will appear in Finder under SHARED in the format of 169.254.xxx.x
    (where 169.254.xxx.x is the device's Gateway IP)
  4. Transfer the desired files to and from the device's network shared folder and the computer

Note: If error message You can't install the 'Network' preferences pane because it is already installed is seen then refer to the Additional Information section below for further steps.

File Sharing with a Windows PC via USB connection

In order to share files between a Windows PC and BlackBerry device the BlackBerry Device Manager software is required which may be installed by one of the following methods:

  • Download and install BlackBerry Link by clicking here.
     
  • Installing the BlackBerry Device Manager software following the steps listed below.
  1. Connect the BlackBerry Device to the computer via USB cable.
  2. If BlackBerry Device Manager is not yet installed, the BlackBerry Device will display a screen entitled Installing Drivers.
  3. On the computer, double click the BlackBerry Device CD drive icon or BlackBerry Link Installation.
  4. Open the Drivers folder.
  5. Double click Setup.exe.
  6. Select the appropriate Region
  7. Accept the License Agreement
  8. Select Install
  9. Select Finish
  10. Click and then OK to the prompt confirming that the device will need to be disconnected and then reconnected prior to use.

Perform the following steps to transfer files after installing the BlackBerry Device Manager software:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer and once connected the BlackBerry device will be mounted as a Network Drive labelled Device [PIN: 5XXXXXXX] or BlackBerry [PIN: 2XXXXXXX]
  2. Double click the network drive icon to access the BlackBerry device or BlackBerry device folders.

If the error message You can't install the 'Network' preferences pane because it is already installed is received while attempting to install the Network Device, complete the following steps:

1. Click OK and Navigate to System Preferences > Network
2. Click OK to accept the network changes. If the acceptance prompt is not displayed, continue to the next step.
3. Click the + under the listed network devices.
4. Click Create on the RIM Network device interface screen.

Notes:

  • File and Folder creation is only available on the BlackBerry PlayBook within the sub directories of the file structure. This is by design.
  • The main folders of the BlackBerry PlayBook are not meant to be modified renamed deleted or changed.  This is by design.
  • While any file type can physically be moved to the BlackBerry PlayBook the files capable of being opened are still limited to KB26606 as well as KB26518.
  • Wi-Fi File sharing should work with any Operating system such as Linux, however it is not supported by BlackBerry.
