What is a BlackBerry Orphaned Contacts folder

Article ID: KB26373

Type: Support Content

Last Modified: 01-04-2013

Product(s) Affected:

  • BlackBerry Desktop Software for Windows
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange
  • BlackBerry smartphones
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server
  • BlackBerry Desktop Software (Windows)
The BlackBerry Orphaned Contacts folder information is created when the BlackBerry mail agent gets an addContact request from the BlackBerry smartphone during a slow sync or activation, and the when folderID doesn’t exist in the database. This is used to prevent these contacts from being put into the default contacts folder which might cause duplicates or public folder contacts to be added to the default private folder.
  1. Typically during a migration process with BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter, the syncfolderlist table isn’t moved to the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server, this can cause the BlackBerry smartphone to have contacts with folderIDs that no longer exist on the new database.
  2. Potentially a move between Microsoft Exchange Servers could result in the same issue as the folders themselves might fail to migrate or preserve the folderIDs expected from the database.
Merge the contacts using Microsoft Outlook to avoid loss of data and then clear the contacts from the BlackBerry smartphone and wirelessly reload them.  For more information please see KB16295.
