- BlackBerry® PlayBook™
To protect the contents of the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ in case it is lost or stolen, it is recommended to enable a password on the tablet.
Note: This is a separate password from the BlackBerry® ID password used to activate the tablet during setup. The password securing the tablet will need to be entered to unlock it based on the lock out timer configured on the BlackBerry PlayBook.
To password protect the BlackBerry PlayBook, complete the following:
- On the BlackBerry PlayBook, tap the Gear icon in the upper right corner to open Settings.
- Tap Security from the list on the left.
- Tap Password.
- Next to the Enable Password option, swipe the slider to the On position.
- This will prompt the Set Password screen. Enter the password in the New and Confirm Password fields, then tap OK.
- Next to the Lock After option, tap the drop down list and select an appropriate timeout setting.
Note: When file sharing and Wi-Fi® sharing are enabled it is recommended to enable a password to protect your file system. This protects shared media, this is different from the password protect as this prevents someone from connecting your PlayBook to the PC to access your files or over a wireless network.
To protect stored media please enable a password for Storage & Sharing:
- On the BlackBerry PlayBook, tap the Gear icon in the upper right corner to open Settings.
- Tap Storage & Sharing in the list on the left.
- Scroll down to password and toggle the slider for Password Protect to on.
- Enter a new password and confirm the new password.
Note: There are 10 attempts to enter the BlackBerry PlayBook password successfully. If the password is entered incorrectly 10 times, the BlackBerry PlayBook will perform a security wipe and erase all user stored data. It is recommended to back up the contents of the BlackBerry PlayBook periodically by using the BlackBerry Desktop Software. For more information on backing up the BlackBerry PlayBook, see KB26134. For more information on the security wipe of a BlackBerry PlayBook, see KB27188.
Note: If the BlackBerry PlayBook is lost or stolen, it is recommended to change the BlackBerry ID password associated to the BlackBerry PlayBook. For more information on changing the BlackBerry ID password, see KB26361.
