The latest BlackBerry Internet Service release contains two important changes which will impact the user experience and will make wiping the BlackBerry smartphone of critical importance when the user transfers BlackBerry smartphone ownership:
1. When the user wipes the BlackBerry smartphone, BlackBerry Internet Service email delivery may be stopped, including address book or calendar updates for those sources which support syncing these services. The user of a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 6 or lower may need to re-validate each of the integrated mail sources in order to restore delivery; the user of a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 7 or higher will simply need to sign in using their BlackBerry ID in order to restore delivery.
2. BlackBerry Internet Service email delivery will no longer be stopped when a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) swap or carrier change occurs. This means that if a user removes the SIM and transfers ownership of the BlackBerry smartphone to a new user, the first user's BlackBerry Internet Service email, including address book and calendar updates will continue to be delivered to the BlackBerry smartphone after the new user inserts a new SIM and powers on the BlackBerry smartphone. If the BlackBerry smartphone doesn't use a SIM, the same will be true after the user contacts a new carrier and activates service with the new carrier.
These two changes mean that the way that BlackBerry Internet Service recognizes that a BlackBerry smartphone has changed hands is now via the BlackBerry smartphone wipe event rather than via the SIM swap or carrier change event. The user is responsible for wiping the BlackBerry smartphone and thus safeguarding not only the data that already exists on the BlackBerry smartphone , but also future emails that may be directed to an integrated mail source, from unauthorized access.
