CollapseOverview

Windows® Small Business Server (SBS) is a supported Operating System for Universal Device Services (UDS). Since SBS consists of Domain Controller/Exchange/SQL Server on the same machine, UDS can also be installed on this same server.

In additions to the requirements outlined in the UDS installation guide, the following pre-installation tasks need to be performed. Please verify these four configurations before UDS installs to prevent any potential installation errors.

Perquisites:

  1. Modify the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation value to 2.
    a. Open registry by going to start > run > regedit
    b. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\File System
    c. Change NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation decimal value to 2.
    d. Restart the SBS Server.

Note: By Default name creation is disabled on NTFS partition (NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation Value is set to 1). Due to this configuration, when running the UDS installer, the installer is not able to locate a log file from the JRE installation and causes the installation of JRE6 Update 31 to fail. For further information refer to KB31017.

  2. Verify IIS WebDav Publishing role service is removed.
    a. Go to Administrative Tools > Server Manager > Roles
    b. Select Web Server (IIS)
    c. On the right pane scroll down until Role Services
    d. Click on Remove Role Services
    e. Uncheck WebDAV Publishing
    f. Click Next
    g. Click Finish

  3. If Advanced Install of UDS is planned, verify if TCP/IP protocol is enabled for SQL server to support database connectivity for the management database.
    a. On the SBS, Open SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server Network Configuration
    b. Click on the Protocols for <SQL INSTANCE>, which will host the UDS installation
    c. Enable TCP/IP services. Set a static port (default 1433) if static will be used.

  4. Create a custom port for the Communication Module.
    a. During installation of UDS the default port for Communication module is 443. This must be changed to a new custom port.

Note: By Default in a SBS Port 443 is reserved to remote web workplace and the default web site. Therefore, a new port must be defined upon UDS Installation.
CollapseAdditional Information
  1. Should the installer fail during installing JRE, cancel the installation and then apply the JRE6 Update 31 manually .
    a. Locate the jre-6u31-windows-i586.exe file under the Extracted UDS installation folder.  i.e. Under CDLayout(Extracted) >  Tools.
    b. Open command line and type the following jre-6u31-windows-i586.exe STATIC=1
    c. After JRE is installed successfully, reinstall UDS to complete the UDS installation.
