Call direction determines how the setup of the media path between the PBX and the BlackBerry® smartphone is initiated. The BlackBerry Mobile Voice System can be configured to use PBX-initiated or BlackBerry device-initiated call direction. Call direction can be configured for incoming and outgoing calls. When MVS Call direction is configured for PBX Initiated Calls, the PBX actually calls the MVS Client enabled BlackBerry Smartphone via Public Switching Telephone Network Trunking to establish media path between the PBX and MVS Client. For device initiated calls, the MVS Client actually calls into the PBX to establish a media path between the MVS Client and PBX. Ultimately, the difference is how the first call leg is established between the PBX and MVS Client during call setup. For more information regarding BlackBerry MVS Call Direction, please reference the BlackBerry Mobile Voice System Version 5.1 Service Pack 1 Implementation Guide Page 8. Below are examples of both call directions.

PBX Initiated:

PBX ANI number must be allocated as a dedicated MVS resource on the PBX, and same number configured within the MVS Console. The MVS Client will know this due to the PBX ANI number being stored in the MVS Database and when a MVS user is provisioned, this number will be sent down along with provisioning data, service books, IT Policies, etc.

  1. MVS Enabled BlackBerry Smartphone dials a number
  2. Call request is sent from the device to the Blackberry® Enterprise Server via enterprise connection
  3. Blackberry® Enterprise Server identifies this as an MVS Call and sends call request to the MVS Server
  4. MVS Server sends an acknowledgment back to the BlackBerry Smartphone over enterprise indicating call is in the process of being setup
  5. MVS Server sends call request to the PBX
  6. PBX calls the MVS Enabled BlackBerry smartphone Mobile Number
  7. When the PBX makes the outbound call to the MVS Enabled BlackBerry Smartphone, it will serve as an outbound ANI and the MVS Enabled BlackBerry Smartphone will see this number and answer the call

Device Initiated:

Device Initiated number must also be allocated as a dedicated MVS resource on the PBX, and same number configured within the MVS Console.  The MVS Client will know this due to the PBX ANI number being stored in the MVS Database and when a MVS user is provisioned, this number will be sent down along with provisioning data, service books, IT Policies, etc.

  1. MVS Enabled BlackBerry Smartphone dials a number
  2. Call request is sent from the MVS Enabled BlackBerry Smartphone to the Blackberry Enterprise Server via enterprise connection
  3. Blackberry Enterprise Server identifies this as an MVS Call and sends call request to the MVS Server
  4. MVS Server sends an acknowledgment back to the MVS Enabled BlackBerry Smartphone over enterprise indicating call is in the process of being setup
  5. The MVS Enabled BlackBerry Smartphone, will dial the DNIS Number, calling the PBX
  6. PBX will answer the call and route the call to the MVS Server
  7. DNIS number must be an active number dedicated to routing calls to the MVS Server. All the necessary routes must be configured on the PBX to make this happen
