In BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 4.1 SP5 to 5.0 SP3, the administrator can add an icon to the Home screen of BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.1 to 4.7 in a BlackBerry® Domain. This icon allows the users to view only email messages that are sent and received from their organization's BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
This feature sets a flag in a service book, which turns on or turns off the Home screen icon. The name of the icon is the same as the name of the service book. The service book name is specified in the message service display name field, under the Advanced tab of the Email Settings tool in BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. The default setting for this feature is off.
This was changed in BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 so that it is now a new feature called Mailbox Icon Management. The goal here is to streamline which messages are displayed in the main messages app and control how single-service icons are displayed on the device. Essentially this new device side feature gives the user full control over this on the device and makes the BESOnlyMessages.sql setting irrelevant after BlackBerry Device Software 5.0. To turn on or turn off this feature, complete the following steps:
Warning: Do not edit the files. Importing a modified file might cause problems on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Note: The files EnableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql, DisableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql, and BBDBUpdate.exe are in the attached .zip file at the bottom of this article.
- Extract the files in the attached BESOnlyMessageApplication.zip file to a temporary folder on the local computer.
- From a command prompt, change the current directory to the temporary folder from Step 1.
- Turn on or turn off the feature.
To turn on this feature:
Type the following command using the EnableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql input file:
For Local Database: bbdbupdate -db <database_name> -input EnableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql
For Remote Database or Local Database with a named instance: bbdbupdate -n < Host name of SQLserver\ instance name (if applicable )> -db <database_name> -input EnableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql
To turn off this feature:
Type the following command using the DisableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql input file:
For Local Database: bbdbupdate -db <database_name> -input DisableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql
For Remote Database or Local Database with a named instance: bbdbupdate –n < Host name of SQLserver\ instance name (if applicable )> -db <database_name> -input DisableBESOnlyMessageApplication.sql
Note: Replace <database_name> with the name of the BlackBerry Configuration Database. The default name is BESMgmt.
Note: If Invalid argument at -n appears with a remote database or a named instance when running this command, replace the server name with the IP address of that server.
- Run the BBDBUpdate.exe tool and review the screen output for any errors.
Once the database script is applied to the database, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server must send updated service book data to each BlackBerry smartphone. Once the service book data is received on the BlackBerry smartphone, the changes are visible on the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone. If this feature is turned on, a new message list icon with the same name as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service books appears (by default Desktop). If this feature is turned off, the icon disappears from the Home screen once the update is applied to the BlackBerry smartphone.
To find a list of command line parameters for the BBDBUpdate.exe tool, run the tool from the command prompt window with no parameters.
Review the usage help screen to determine the parameters required for the particular installation.

This must be run every time a new BlackBerry Enterprise Server is added to the BlackBerry Domain.
