How to identify which version of BlackBerry Messenger is currently installed on the BlackBerry Smartphone

To identify which version of BlackBerry® Messenger is currently installed on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps based on the BlackBerry® Device Software version.

For BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 to 7.0:

  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, select Options
  2. Select Device
  3. Select Application Management
  4. BlackBerry Messenger will be displayed in the Applications - All category accompanied by the application version.
    • For example, the following will appear; BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.3.22

For BlackBerry Device Software 5.0:

  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, select Options
  2. Select Applications
  3. Select Add-on
  4. BlackBerry Messenger will be displayed in the listing accompanied by the application version.
    • For example, the following will appear; BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.3.22

For BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 to 4.7.1:

  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, select Options
  2. Select Advanced Options
  3. Select Applications
  4. BlackBerry Messenger will be displayed in the listing accompanied by the application version.
    • For example, the following will appear; BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.3.22


Before attempting the upgrade, it is recommended to make a backup of the BlackBerry Messenger contact list. To do this, complete the following steps.

  1. On the Home screen or in the Instant Messaging folder, click the BlackBerry Messenger icon.
  2. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Click Back Up.
  5. Click Back up files locally.
  6. To save a backup file automatically when the contact list changes, select the Auto save contact list changes check box.
  7. Click Back Up Now.
  8. Choose to save on Media Card or On Device and select Save.

To restore the BlackBerry Messenger contact list, complete the following steps:

Note: To perform this task, there must be a created backup file of BlackBerry Messenger contacts saved to the BlackBerry smartphone or to an inserted media card.

  1. On the Home screen or in the Instant Messaging folder, click the BlackBerry Messenger icon.
  2. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Click Restore.
  5. Click Restore using a backup file from device.
  6. Select a backup file.
  7. Click Yes.

Note: The restore may automatically re-invite the BlackBerry Smartphone to groups that it previously belonged to when the backup was done.

To upgrade to the latest version of BlackBerry Messenger for BlackBerry Software versions 4.5 to 7.0, complete the following steps using AppWorld:

  1. Launch the BlackBerry AppWorld icon from the home screen.

    Note: If BlackBerry AppWorld is not installed, please visit http://www.blackberry.com/appworld from the BlackBerry Smartphone.

  2. Select the Search button
  3. Type in "BlackBerry Messenger" and press enter. Select BlackBerry Messenger
  4. Select Download or Upgrade. If Reinstall is listed, the latest version is already installed.
To upgrade to the latest version of BlackBerry Messenger using the web, please visit http://www.blackberry.com/bbm to download the latest supported version.
