"There was an error updating your software. There is not enough storage space on the device for this update" appears during a BlackBerry Device Software update

When BlackBerry® Desktop Software is used to perform an update to the BlackBerry® Device Software, the following message appears:

There was an error updating your software. There is not enough storage space on your device for the update. You need to delete at least 23 MB before you can continue with the update.

Using BlackBerry Desktop Software on a Mac computer you may see the following message:

There is not enough storage space on your device for the update. 30 MB is required to install the update.

In order to successfully update the BlackBerry Device Software, sufficient space is required on the BlackBerry® smartphone to accommodate the updated application and permit the update to complete.

To reduce the amount of application memory that is being used, remove unnecessary applications from the BlackBerry smartphone and delete old messages, calendar entries, memos, etc. For information on maximizing free space and battery power on the BlackBerry smartphone, see KB14320.
