CollapseOverview

As a result of changes being made by Microsoft, BlackBerry will be making changes to how the BlackBerry Internet Service will access and deliver Microsoft email and contact synchronization services to BlackBerry smartphones running Blackberry 7.1 or earlier.

In spring of 2014, Microsoft is making changes and the MSN MSP protocol that BlackBerry uses to deliver Microsoft email to BlackBerry devices running BlackBerry 7.1 or earlier, will no longer be available.

MSN MSP will be replaced with the following new protocols:

  • IMAP for email
  • Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for contact synchronization.

Transitioning from MSP MSP to IMAP means a change from near real-time email delivery to a polling delivery which will check for new email at regular intervals. In addition, Microsoft email accounts in areas where MSN MSP is not supported will also transition from POP3 to IMAP.

CollapseAdditional Information

There is no action required for existing BlackBerry customers who have Microsoft email accounts integrated on their BlackBerry smartphones using the BlackBerry Internet Service.

From early 2014, existing Microsoft accounts will be automatically updated to IMAP for email and to Exchange ActiveSync for contact synchronization.

Newly integrated Microsoft email accounts on the BlackBerry smartphone will automatically use the new protocols when they are available.

Note: IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync will be the only protocols allowed for Microsoft accounts, MSN MSP and POP will not be available once the changes are made.

For more information on Microsoft Mobile Services Protocol see KB24360.
